Southern Encounter Aquarium
See rare and unusual marine creatures at Southern Encounter Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the South Island and a great Christchurch activity for all. Feed salmon and trout, touch living starfish, crabs and anemones and watch the daily dive-feeds. Southern Encounter Aquarium also features a Kiwi House, where you can see our national icon – an endangered flightless bird – foraging in a nocturnal bush setting.
Orana Wildlife Park, Christchurch
Orana Wildlife Park, just 10 minutes drive from Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport, is New Zealand’s largest open-range conservation and wildlife park. Orana Wildlife Park is home to many endangered New Zealand and African animals, and you can see more than 400 animals from over 70 species on your visit.
See the New Zealand icon, the Kiwi, in the Nocturnal House, a great Christchurch attraction. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve also offers an exciting Kiwi experience. Walk through the huge aviary and see many of New Zealand’s native birds and reptiles including the Kea and Tuatara. See Rhino, Cheetah and hand-feed a Giraffe. Watch mouth agape as the Orana Lions devour their lunch. You can even touch and feed friendly farm animals such as lambs, goats and alpacas.
Whale Watching
Take a day-trip to Kaikoura for an experience that will live in your memory forever – getting up-close to a leviathan of the sea – a mighty Sperm Whale. Kaikoura is approximately two hours’ drive from Christchurch.
Once at this small coastal town, you’ll travel to the deep ocean off the Kaikoura Coast in a catamaran, specifically designed for whale watching. Hear the whale song and see water shoot from their blowholes high into the air as the whales surface to breathe. Experience the majesty of a full breach as a whale leaps out of the water and lands on its back with a thunderous splash and marvel at their massive tails as they dive back to the deep.
Along the way, you can also see the impressive sea-bird the Albatross, hundreds of wild dolphins, including the endangered and native Hector’s Dolphin, New Zealand seals and much more. No trip to the South Island is complete without a journey aboard a Kaikoura whale watching boat, and Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport would be happy to book this activity and associated transport for you.
After your amazing experience, you can purchase photographs and other souvenirs and then make your way back to Christchurch and the comfort of the Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport.
