Arts & CultureChristchurch is a city filled with history and was modelled on the hometowns of this region’s earliest European immigrants. The city’s leading early architect, Benjamin Woolfield Mountfort, left an enduring legacy with his Gothic Revival inspired buildings. Many distinctive buildings still standing today reflect the great variety of architectural tastes favoured in late Victorian and Edwardian times.
Most of Christchurch’s historic (and now protected) buildings can only be viewed from the street, but a number of public buildings and churches are open to the public. Pick up a Historic Christchurch map and information guide from the reception area at Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport, to explore and enjoy Christchurch’s diverse architecture and history.
Also just a short drive from our Christchurch Airport hotel is Ferrymead Heritage Park – where the past is brought back to life. Stroll through the replica Edwardian township with its bakery, school, stables, post office and telephone exchange and general store. Ferrymead also features several excellent museums including a Model Train Museum. Here you can take a fun train, tram or horse carriage ride.
For a Christchurch Maori culture experience, visit Ko Tane Living Maori Village at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve . Experience the excitement of the wero; the challenge to visitors; hear the enchanting Maori myths and the traditional call of the Karanga, performed by the women of the tribe. If you would like to join in, take the opportunity to take part in the performance of the haka for the men or the poi dance for the women. This is a great Christchurch attraction for overseas visitors wishing to learn about the traditional Maori culture of New Zealand.
